How can you get a free DNA test kit?

How can you get a free DNA test kit?

How can you get a free DNA test kit?

Many people wonder if they can get a free DNA test kit, for whatever reason they require one. If you are interested in a free DNA testing kit, you may be in luck, depending on what you want the test for and where you live.

Remember, just because you’re able to get a DNA testing kit for free, doesn’t mean you’ll get the laboratory processing for free. The DNA testing process requires specialized equipment and experienced personnel, so the laboratories that undertake DNA tests must be able to cover their costs in most cases.

The kit is often referred to as the pack that you receive in the mail which allows you to collect the samples, you then have to send it away for processing so that you can get your results. It’s important to understand the difference between the DNA testing kit, and the actual DNA test that provides the results.

How to get free DNA testing kits

The primary question that most people ask is if they can get a DNA paternity test for free. However, nowhere in the United States provides this service for free. Many people would think that paternity testing is free on the National Health Service (NHS) if you live in the UK, but the paternity testing page on the NHS Choices website indicates this is not the case.

Some DNA tests are available for free in the UK via the NHS, however, these tests are only available to help your doctor diagnose certain diseases, such as Huntington’s Disease. Free tests on the NHS might also be available if you’re worried about passing on certain genetic diseases to your children. If you have a particular hereditary disease in your family history, it may be a good idea to speak to your physician about the price of a DNA test if you live in the US, or if you can get the test for free if you live in the UK. You may use the results to make an informed decision about whether or not you want to have kids later in life.

Many times, genetic testing requires multiple non-genetic tests to be performed first. You will be required to go to your doctor and get a preliminary diagnosis of the disease. If you live in the UK, they will contact the NHS and find out if those tests are available for free. You may then be sent to a genetic clinic to have your samples taken. Your DNA can be extracted from the samples and analysed to see if you have a high genetic predisposition to the disease in question.

If so, you can start other testing and treatment plans to combat the disease.

Claims of free DNA testing kits

Most people search online to find these tests for free and find many websites that claim to provide free testing. Beware of laboratories that will send you just the kit for free, which will allow you to collect the DNA samples (e.g. DNA Diagnostics Center), but still require you to pay for the samples to be processed, which can be between $69 and $600 depending on the type of test you need. For a list of paternity test prices, you can visit our paternity testing listing page.

Some free DNA testing sites may not be legitimate. Illegitimate websites may take the sample and may perform testing, but they are not qualified to do so. They may also use the ruse to steal your information or try to exploit you in some way. It is best not to use these free DNA test websites.

Types of DNA test

Most people don’t realize that there are multitudes of tests available. Of course, paternity testing is well known, whether it be for peace of mind or mandated by the courts. However, other less well known choices can include maternity tests, absent-parent tests, and health testing.

Some couples who’ve adopted choose to run DNA tests on their adopted child to check for hereditary diseases or to better understand their ethnic breakdown.

Expectant parents can buy prenatal DNA testing to find out the sex of the child, or even check who the biological father is.

You can also find DNA tests to prove a relationship with other family members, such as siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or cousins. Many people live their entire lives thinking they are related to someone, only to find out they aren’t. If you are worried that you may not really be related to the person in question, you can test your DNA against theirs to find out for sure.

Others want to have their DNA tested so they can have art created using their unique genetics. Once the test is complete, the laboratory can conduct a computer visualization, and a painting can be rendered to show your uniqueness. However, this option is not free and likely not provided by any doctor or health clinic.

Pet DNA tests are also available. Many people worry that their pet may get lost or stolen. Getting your pet tested can help law enforcement find your animal. This test kit can also be used to ensure that the pet you purchased is what was claimed. For example, if you buy an animal of a certain breed, you want to ensure it is the breed that was claimed.

Other Tests

Some DNA tests are necessary, like paternity tests or DNA tests for inherited diseases, while others are not. For example, you can have a genetic dating test completed, which will use your DNA to find the most compatible partner for you.

Infidelity testing is also on the rise. More and more spouses believe their partner is having an affair and want absolute proof. This type of testing requires you to send in clothing or bed linen, perhaps with your own DNA sample, so that the laboratory can exclude traces of your DNA and identify how many other different people have come into contact with these items, and what sex they are. However, just remember that for these tests to be legal, you must have consent from your spouse which might be difficult to get.

Another fun DNA test includes personality testing. You can find out which personality traits you possess according to your DNA, and which ones are most dominating. You’ll learn more about yourself, may find out which people you’re most compatible with, and may be able to determine the career you would most excel at.

Why aren’t DNA tests free?

Because DNA tests can help in so many ways, you may be wondering why you cannot get a free DNA test kit. Many people have queried their doctors and insurance companies trying to figure out why they must pay for these tests.

Even when the court requires a paternity test, there is a cost attached to the testing process which will be handled by private laboratories.

For paternity testing, as for most DNA tests, a ‘wet lab’ is required to process the samples and generate results. There is a cost attached to the equipment and expertise required to undertake the test, and this doesn’t account for the cost of managing the process and communicating with the customers.

With the exception of some health-related free DNA testing kits available on the NHS in the UK, the laboratories that undertake DNA testing will require payment for services rendered. If you choose to use a home DNA testing kit, you can take the samples yourself, seal it up and send it in. However, the laboratory must still use their resources and knowledge to do the test and send you the results.

If you choose to have your doctor administer the test, the laboratory still must do its own work, but your doctor must take the sample and send it in, which may require even more fees.

It cannot be stressed enough that if you find a website or company claiming to offer a free DNA testing kit, you must make sure you know what you are getting.

Sometimes, you may find certain biological projects that offer free DNA testing kits. You can find these projects by searching online. If you qualify, you will have a test performed on you and will get the results free. However, qualifications may include having a particular disease, consenting to more tests, or using particular doctors.

What are the costs?

The costs of DNA tests can vary, depending on where you live, who administers the test, how long you want to wait for the results, and which laboratory you use.

If you would like more information on the costs of genetic testing or DNA tests, you can go to our DNA test category page. Here you will find the different categories of DNA tests you can buy. Clicking on the one you want to consider will provide you with a list of choices based on the country of the laboratory, laboratory name, and price. The lists are ranked from highest rated to lowest rated, the rating is based on user reviews and the editor’s review. Sometimes the laboratory at the top of the list has paid for the highest rating, indicated by a blue ‘AD’ presented against their listing. You’ll also notice that some lists provide telephone numbers for the laboratories, website links, reviews, as well as how soon you’ll see results.

What to consider before testing?

It is important to decide why you want a DNA test and how it could change your life. Right now, you may want to know who the father of your child is, but after you find out, you can’t forget that information.

Most people prefer to use a company with a laboratory located in the same area. For example, if you live in the US and choose a US laboratory with which to do business, you may find you’ll get the results much sooner than if you had chosen a non-US laboratory.

The cost is always going to be an important factor, but remember that the cheapest option may not be the best. That said, the most expensive option may not be the right choice either. If you are going to go through with the DNA test, you should thoroughly research each laboratory by reading reviews, visiting their website and learning as much as you can from them.

What if the court requires a DNA test?

If the court has required a DNA test, they may impose other restrictions or stipulations, and it is always recommended to follow their recommendations. For example, they may request that you use particular laboratories, have the information sealed until the court date, or something else. It is up to you to find out this information and let the testing facility or laboratory know ahead of time. Otherwise, your case may be thrown out because you didn’t follow the rules. The laboratory or facility you select is not responsible for knowing the rules and regulations for your case.

What if I need a DNA test to assess a potential health risk?

If you are being tested due to a potential health risk, you may prefer to use a clinic recommended by your doctor for testing. While you can still do a test at home for your genetic predisposition to certain diseases, some doctors will not accept these results. If you are concerned, it might be a better idea to have the genetic test commissioned by your doctor so as not to waste money unnecessarily.

As you can see, you can only get a free DNA test in very specific circumstances. It is therefore advised that you speak with your physician first, and research the type of DNA test you should take. If your doctor recommends a laboratory, you should do your best to research it, along with the other laboratories that provide the same type of test.

Opting for a DNA test is an important decision and shouldn’t be entered into lightly. You should consider the implications of genetic testing. You’ll want to take your time, talk to other family members and decide what is right for you.

In high school I met this girl and she asked me a question about getting her pregnant and she found out that her boyfriend find out by the doctor that it’s 50-50 chance that he couldn’t make no baby and his know what didn’t drop and she asked me can we have a threesome and I’m pretty calm and her if she found out she was pregnant with a baby girl they should have named their daughter and I didn’t know about it and she got dark skin and look like me and now she 8 years old about to be 9 and the man who Ray her been thinking that’s her daddy Bi-Lo the mother told me that they didn’t had a DNA test done and I want to know can I get one to find out if she’s mine and the mother lost custody and her grandma got full custody and if the DNA comes out She’s Mine can I get her

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your recent comment.

We'd recommend you ask for the legal guardian's permission (the child's grandma in this case) to take a DNA test with the child. If permission is denied, we'd recommend that you take legal advice - you can apply for a declaration of parentage and the court might decide to let you take a DNA test with the child.

I’ve never known who my parents are I know I am an American Indian and that my third great grandfather is Chief Joseph. I was adopted and I know nothing else about my background I just want to know about myself and the rest of my family please help.

Hi Robin,

Thank you for your recent comment.

We recommend you take an autosomal DNA test with 23andMe, Ancestry.com or Family Tree DNA which will report on your ethnic breakdown and the percentage of your DNA that's associated to Native American tribes. These services will also let you contact any living relatives you have according to how much DNA you share with them.

If you're interested in exactly which tribes your DNA is associated to, you can take an autosomal DNA test with DNA Tribes - their 'Genetic Ancestry Analysis'. However, a significant percentage of your DNA would need to be Native American in order for them to suggest which tribes you originate from.

Kind regards

Hi Carol,

Thank you for your recent comment.

If you are unable to ask your biological father or the relatives of your biological father to take a test, we'd recommend you take an autosomal DNA test. This will tell you how much of your DNA is associated to each ethnicity e.g. 20% Sub-Saharan African, 30% West Indian, 50% British Irish.

Please bear in mind that approximately 50% of your autosomal DNA is inherited from each parent (it’s not exactly 50% because chromosomes can break down and recombine when you’re conceived), and as it cannot be determined which autosomes or autosomal segments you’ve inherited from which parent; the report you'll receive won't be able to tell you which parent is responsible for each ethnic segment you possess.

Therefore, if you're unable to ask you biological mother to take a test (so that you can try to elimiate the ethnic segments that she's contributed to your DNA), we recommend that you ask the provider you choose to buy the test from for the typical ethnic mix of a White British person. This should help you eliminate the ethnic segments that your mother has contributed to your DNA, meaning that the remaining ethnic segments are from your biological father and represent his ethnic breakdown.

The most popular autosomal DNA tests are 23andMe, AncestryDNA and Family Tree DNA's 'Family Finder' test.

Obviously our father has passed away so could you please let us know which DNA test we need to purchase for two siblings to take to confirm wether they have the same Father or not!

Recently found out my dad might have another biological child, but I only know a few details about her and her mother. What do I do?

Hi Ang,

Thank you for your recent comment.

I would recommend that you think carefully about what you would like to happen. If your father has another biological child and you want to have a relationship with your half-sibling, I would suggest that you ask your father for an introduction. If you are not on good terms with your father, then I would recommend you seriously consider the consequences of attempting to contact your half-sibling without your father's consent. At the very least, you should wait until you're sure that your half-sibling is over 18, and even then, bear in mind that any contact without your father's consent could be very upsetting for all involved.

I want to do a DNA test with my sons alleged father. I want to do it for custody reasons, I may end up in a shelter and don’t want to put my son through that so I need to know if he is or isn’t so I can give the grandmother temporary custody.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for your recent comment.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I’m afraid we know of no providers currently offering free paternity testing. We'd suggest that you firstly seek legal advice about whether you're eligible for any kind of financial or legal aid and whether a paternity test is necessary for the grandmother to gain temporary custody of your son.

Hi I have a lot of medical illnesses and I would like to get a dna test to see if there is something the doctors are missing. I’m 40 and basically stuck to bed. I also want to make sure my children are not at risk.

Thank you

Shirley

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for your recent comment. I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

I’m afraid our website only lists DNA tests that are used for non-diagnostic purposes, so we can't recommend any to help you with your current medical conditions.

However, it is possible for your children to take DNA tests to identify whether they are genetically predisposed to developing certain health conditions. We'd recommend that you visit this page, which lists the companies that sell health-related DNA tests: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/health-testing. Please note that these tests are often only available to those over 18 years of age.

You can read more about genetic predisposition DNA tests in our article 'What are the pros and cons of genetic screening?': https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/news/2016-02-19-what-are-the-pros-and-cons-of-genetic-screening

Hi Mercedes,

Thank you for your recent comment.

We'd suggest visiting this page which lists the companies that actively say that they offer cousin testing: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/cousin-testing.

However, many companies will be able to carry out DNA testing to determine whether you are cousins, possibly using additional or alternative relatives. It's therefore worth making enquiries with some of the larger companies (eg. DNA Diagnostics Center) as they will best be able to explain what it takes to get the most accurate result.

As much as I would love to trace my ancestry I’m actually in dire need for health reasons. It is believed I have some unlabeled form of autoimmune disease; popular medications aren’t working and four different Rheumatologists have come up empty. My last 2 hopes are a DNA and a semi-local (lost all hope) type of hospital. Is there any testing agency you can recommend that is either free or at least still cheap (medications are so expensive!).

Hi Emily,

Thank you for your recent comment, I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

I’m afraid we only list tests that are suitable for those that are currently healthy, but are interested in finding out about their genetic predisposition to conditions they may develop in the future. Therefore, we're unfortunately unable to offer any test recommendations at this time, but suggest that you speak to a medical professional about any options that might be available through them.

August 14, 2017

I would like to testing on my paternal line but given that I am female and I do not have the Y chromosome I was wondering if I could do the testing on my half brother with whom I share a father? Would his results be the same as mine if I was born male given that we have the same father or would his results confuse me as he has a different mother?

I would also like to do paternal testing for my mother but given that her father has long passed on I figured I would use her full brother, unfortunately he recently passed away. I’m curious if I could use her full brothers son to do paternal testing, would I still get direct results?

Thank you!

Hi Ana,

Thank you for your recent comment.

For testing your paternal line you can indeed ask your half brother to take the test and you'll receive the same results that you would have had you been born male. This is because paternal lineage testing is performed using the Y chromosome (aka Y DNA), a chromosome that will be shared by your father and your half brother. You can learn more from our article about Y DNA testing.

In answer to the second part of your question, yes, you could ask your mother's full brother's son to take a Y DNA test to discover your mother's paternal lineage. This is because your mother's father and your mother's full brother's son will share a Y chromosome.

I hope that helps!

Dear Ms. Harriet

I hope you are all right

I am Somali and several people who I are from the same subtribe did the dna test and got T haplogroup, So I am interested in doing a test to see if am in T haplogroup , since I know already, I want to go deeper in the T , so which companies offer that NG Gen 2.0: or Family tree dna

Yours Sincerely

Abdirahman Ali

Hi Abdirahman,

Thank you for your recent comment.

We suggest firstly taking a look at our articles What is a mitochondrial DNA test? and What is a Y DNA test?, as these are the types of DNA tests that can provide you with details about your maternal and paternal haplogroups.

We'd then recommend visiting this page, which lists the companies that sell ancestry tests: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/ancestry You can choose those that offer 'Paternal Analysis' to find out about your paternal haplogroup, 'Maternal Analysis' to find out about your maternal haplogroup, and 'Combined Paternal and Maternal Analysis' to find out about both. National Geographic's Geno 2.0 reports on both and Family Tree offers all three options, but there are several other providers that offer the same types of tests, so it's worth having an explore.

Hi June,

We'd recommend having a look at sibling tests or an absent parent tests. You can find a list of sibling test providers on this page: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/sibling-testing You can see a list of absent parent test providers on this page: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/absent-parent-testing

Unfortunately, the accuracy of these tests won't be 100%, so it's worth discussing with the company before purchasing a test to make sure it will provide the range of accuracy you can accept.

If you're concerned about sample tampering, you can buy a legal version of these tests. These require the participants to take the sample in front of a medical professional. However, it's important to sure that all participants are aware of the process before you buy, so as not to waste your money if they choose not to participate.

In terms of which lab to contact, we'd recommend getting in touch with DNA Diagnostics Centre (DDC) to talk through your options. You can call them on 1-888-205-2871. Don't worry, they deal with situations like this all the time.

I have 2 movement disorders. R.E.M. Sleep Behavior Disorder & Tardive Dyskinesia. This may put me at a high rate of risk for Parkinson’s Disease. Also, I have severe treatment resistant depression and there is a genetic test that may tell which medication may be most helpful. I would also like to know my exact ethnic background, because as far as I know I have a jumbled mixture of Western European countries. And some Native American. But I don’t know how much of what or what tribe. And it’s very interesting to find these things out. Would there be any type of studies on movement disorders in the US in the Southern California area that may give these tests for free. Or studies on treatment resistant depression and genetics that I could join potentially? If it’s just mailing in samples, I suppose it could be anywhere in the world. I’ve heard the Mormon Church is very interested in genealogy. Do they do any testing for free for non-Mormons. Also, I’m interested in sites like ancestry because my son’s father doesn’t know who his father is. And my son has a whole side of his family that’s missing. I’m permanently disabled and receive social security disability benefits which aren’t enough to live on. So I really can’t afford any of the testing. If you know of any legitatime sites that aid in such testing. I would be so grateful! Thank you so much!

I have been told so many stories by my Mother, I have no idea where I came from. Her Daughter, who was always told more about me, than I was, spread through just about every school that I was adopted out of pity from someone, and not actually part of the family. I want to find out the truth. Is there a way I can without much or no cost?

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your recent comment, I'm sorry to hear about your concerns.

We'd recommend taking a look at our maternity or paternity testing pages and filtering by price for the cheapest tests: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/maternity-testing or https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/paternity-testing.

If neither parent is able or willing to take a test, you may want to look at our sibling testing page, which lists the providers that sell this type of test: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/sibling-testing.

Alternatively, you could try using an ancestry test to help you find out more about your heritage and family. We'd suggest having a look at this forum post for more information on how to do this: https://dnatestingchoice.com/forum/showthread.php?1254-I-have-no-idea-who-my-father-is-can-a-genetic-ancestry-test-help-me.

Hi Ms. Harriet, My teen son took a DNA test, the test was left alone overnight with the Babie’s mother & family. The babies test was done the next day then mailed. A week or so later, the diagnostic center called Me asking which was the Mom & which was the daughter. Should we retake the test? It just seems like dishonesty or a mistake could have been made. Please reply ASAP as time goes by too quickly. Thank You So Much.

Hi Peggy,

Thank you for your recent comment.

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns. However, so that I'm completely sure what you're asking, would you mind clarifying what you think might have happened? If you're worried about potential sample tampering, we'd recommend taking a look at our guide 'Paternity fraud and how to avoid it' which you can read here: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/news/2015-04-02-paternity-fraud-and-how-to-avoid-it.

can dna testing be done on a lock of hair = even if the lock of hair is 100 years old and what wquld the cost be ?

Hi Alf,

Thank you for your recent comment.

That might be possible, but it will likely depend on factors, such as the condition of the hair and whether the roots are still present. We'd recommend contacting the providers listed on this page, as they advertise the testing of non-standard samples (in this case for infidelity testing, but will likely do so for other purposes too): https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/infidelity-testing.

Hi Amika,

Thank you for your recent comment.

The cost of testing will depend on what type of DNA test you are looking for. We suggest you visit this page, which lists the different types of DNA tests available: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/tests

Most types analyze a saliva or cheek swab sample, but prenatal paternity and prenatal gender tests require the mother to provide a blood sample. You can find providers that sell these tests on the following pages:

We sent a DNA test off on the 18_5 2018 and still not got results any advice .

Hi Nicola,

Thanks for commenting.

DNA test results take different lengths of time to process depending on the provider and test type. Tests for familial relationships (paternity, maternity, etc.) typically take only a few days, whereas tests for health or ancestry can take several weeks.

I'd suggest you check the information or FAQs on the website where you bought the test to find out how long it should take. If your results are late, I'd suggest contacting the provider directly.

Hi, my brother and i, are now being told ,We may have different fathers .!! Which test is best to get ? And will the test also
show our backgrounds ,(ethics)??

Hi Denise,

Thank you for your recent comment.

If you visit this page, you can read the reviews to see which test is best for you: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/paternity-testing

A paternity test can't tell you your ethnic background, but can confirm paternity with 99.99% accuracy.

I hope this information is helpful!

I have a 22 yr old daughter and people have her convinced her father is not her biological dad. It’s tearing our family apart. The other bad thing is her father has been deceased for 12 years. We do however have another daughter together but was wondering how or is it possible to get a paternity test to prove to her and hopefully get closure

Hi,

Thank you for your recent comment.

Since you and your daughter's father have another daughter, you can have both your daughters take a siblingship test, which can prove whether they are full or half siblings. You can find a list of providers here: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/sibling-testing

Alternatively, if the father has a living brother or sister, your daughter can take an aunt/uncle test with them: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/aunt-uncle-testing

Or a grandparent test if she has a paternal grandparent still living: https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/grandparent-testing

Any of these tests can prove paternity since they will show whether your daughter is related to her father's living relatives. I hope this is helpful, and that you find the solution you need!

I wonder if it is possible to check if I have a DNA relation with the Plantagenets. Is there the possibility to have it for free? If not, how much does it cost? Thanks

Hi Mary,

Thank you for commenting.

It is actually possible to find out if you are distantly related to the Plantagenets, since we know the maternal and paternal haplogroups of Richard the III. If you belong to mtDNA haplogroup J1c2c, then you share the same maternal haplogroup as Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England. If your father belongs to the Y-DNA G-P287 haplogroup, then he and you are of the same paternal line as Richard III.

Maternal and paternal haplogroup tests are available from Family Tree DNA and 23andMe.

I’m afraid it's not possible to get a free ancestry test, since the only free DNA tests we are aware of are genetic health screening tests offered by the NHS (UK only) for people with a familial history of breast cancer, etc.

Luckily, you can now get ancestry DNA tests for a relatively low price. If you visit this page you can browse ancestry testing providers by price and ratings to see which is best for you.

I have taken both the HomeDNA test as well as the GPS Origins test. I received very similar results on both tests.
I’m 66 years old and there are many inconsistencies concerning my birth. I have three Birth Certificates that are still circulating around, one of which states that I was a boy who died at eight days old (which I am not, I have given birth to a son) and throughout school, I was considered Male. Also, I was drafted during the Vietnam war! I also had trouble getting a passport when I was 54 because I had three birth certificates.
My “father” was 50% Chicasaw Indian and African American. My “mother” was 50% Irish, 25% Blackfoot Indian and 25% African American. Yet both tests stated that I am only 5.2% and less than 2% Irish!
I need to know if I have any living relatives that I can contact. I need to take a test that can identify any relatives I may still have.
I don’t resemble any members of my family; my personality is completely different and all of the “family” who are still living refuse to take any DNA tests. Both my son and I are alienated from my family, but I would like to introduce my son to my real family. I can’t afford to pay for another tests.
