Good to Know

Genetic dating allows you to compare your DNA with a potential partner to determine your genetic compatibility. This requires a saliva sample from the person or persons who’s DNA will be tested.

On purchasing, the provider will send you a testing kit with everything you need to take the sample. You can take the sample at home and after you send the kit back, you’ll receive your results a few weeks later. Once you get your results you can start testing your compatibility against other people.

Where will my potential matches come from?
Some providers already have a database of people who’re looking to test their DNA against others. Some only offer the initial test, requiring you to find your potential ‘love interest’ first (perhaps on another dating site) before paying an additional fee to test for your genetic compatibility.

How does it work?
Most providers base their science on HLA (human leukocyte antigen) genes to establish genetic compatibility. These genes produce HLA molecules which determine the strength of our immune system, and which we can sense from another person when in close contact, albeit at a subconscious level.

Studies have shown that we’re more attracted to partners with different HLA genes to our own, which is believed to contribute to sexual chemistry. The theory is that we select people on the basis of their becoming the mother or father of our children, and that passing on the widest range of HLA genes to our children will give them the best possible immune system.

What are the benefits of a genetic match?
There are several reasons why finding your genetic match is believed to lead to a long-lasting and successful relationship:

- That the sex lives of genetically compatible partners are more satisfying than average.

- That the fertility rates are higher for genetically compatible couples.

- That genetically compatible couples have healthier children with stronger immune systems.

What genetic dating can’t do
As genetic dating only looks at genetic factors, it can’t account for the social elements of attraction. In other words, the service helps you find the people you’re more likely to have chemistry with, but not whether you enjoy their company or find them funny.
